Research Group

Laura Villanueva
Marine microorganisms are responsible for the maintenance of the biogeochemical cycles in the ocean and are the base of the marine food webs. They harbour an untapped genomic potential to understand cellular evolution, microbial adaptation and their role in climate change.

Our Research

Our group focuses on microbial adaptations and activities of marine microorganisms with emphasis on those present in oxygen-depleted marine areas. To this end, we use molecular methods based on DNA and membrane lipids to determine microbial diversity, adaptation to environmental pressures, and origin and evolution of the microbial cell membrane.
