UBC Seminar

3 February

16:00 – 17:30
Room 2.02
Minnaert Building

Join us on 3 February from 16:00-17:30 for two exciting talks by dr. Hanneke Vlaming and dr. Joana Silva.
Both have recently joined the UBC network and will share insights into their ongoing work. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and network during drinks afterwards.

We hope to see you there!

Dr. Hanneke Vlaming

Unraveling the control of transcription elongation

Hanneke Vlaming has been active as an assistant professor and group leader in the Division of Genome Biology & Epigenetics within the Institute of Biodynamics and Biocomplexity since February 2023. She was recently awarded an Open Competition grant to further develop her research line.

The Vlaming group studies the regulation of transcription with a focus on transcription elongation and termination. They specialize in genetic screening approaches and nascent RNA sequencing techniques, and work with the large datasets these experiments produce.
Check out this vacancy for a postdoc in her lab!

Dr. Joana Silva

Rewriting cell fate with ribosomes

Joana Silva joined the Center of Molecular Medicine at UMC Utrecht as an assistant professor and group leader in July 2025.

The Silva Lab studies how ribosomes actively regulate metabolism and cell fate. Using ribosome profiling, organoids and mitochondrial biology, they investigate how localized translation drives cellular plasticity in health and stress.
