The Human Neurogenetics Unit focuses on genetic studies of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Professor Veldink heads the unit and Dr Jurjen Luykx coordinates the genetic studies for psychiatric disorders. Diseases we focus on include amytrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and psychosis (schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Both wet and dry lab pipelines involving large datasets and sizeable collections of biomaterials are in place. Employees at the lab include lab technicians, PhD students, bioinformaticians and postdocs.

We focus on the following techniques and topics:

  • targeted sequencing: our MiSeq desktop sequencer allows us to sequence genes at deep coverage and high speed
  • high coverage whole genome sequencing data processing and analysis
  • genome-wide association studies: we lead and collaborate in consortia (meta-analyses) and independently perform studies
  • RNA sequencing in target tissue (ALS iPS cells, vessel walls of vascular brain malformations/ aneurysms)

Master students interested in doing an internship at our unit may contact Professor Veldink (polinmz@umcutrecht.nl)
